CO2 networks

ExerGo develops an innovative concept of energy network, the CO2NETORK. Unlike all existing thermal networks using water, ExerGo uses carbon dioxide in a closed circuit. The CO2NETWORK concept consists of a two flexible pipes system, where liquid and vapor CO2 (R744) are used to bidirectionally exchange energy between users, suppliers and the environment. The energy needs of the connected buildings are supplied using CO2 phase change through direct heat exchange and/or decentralized heat pumping or refrigeration units. 


This EPFL patented concept is a unique opportunity to valorize waste energy locally using the network in combination with heat pumps and heat exchangers. It unlocks the synergies between buildings, allowing mutual exchanges of thermal loads. Waste heat from data centers, supermarkets and any cooling system is recovered locally to supply domestic hot water and space heating. Once the energy recovery is maximized, the excess heat (in summer) or the remaining heat demand (in winter) of the interconnected buildings are satisfied by energy exchange with low temperature environmental sources. Lakes, rivers, geothermal, low temperature solar thermal, air become the heat source of decentralized heat pumps in winter and the energy sink of urban and industrial areas in summer.

Widely spread in commercial and industrial refrigeration, carbon dioxide (R744) has an outstanding energy density, making our two-pipe system very compact and scalable up to several Megawatts of heating and cooling.
